
Douglas Maxwell Smith is an integrated marketing communications, brand, digital and mobile veteran with over 18 years of experience. Through his various strategy roles at BBDO, Grey Interactive, Nokia, These Days, Lateral and LBi, he has helped transform the way businesses communicate to their customers on a more conversational level. Clients he has helped include Nokia, Polar Electro, Which?, Mobistar, Faber and Faber, Tourism Flanders, Levi’s, Telenet, Sonera, Amnesty International, Greenpeace, Syngenta, Kraft and others.
From 2000-2004, Douglas was also the co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of the mobile entertainment start-up, Moving Entertainment, where he created the first piece of branded entertainment for mobile phones, a comic series called Flip and Mick, which was created exclusively for Nokia as a way to showcase the graphically capability of their early WAP phones.
Throughout his career, Douglas has won nearly 40 international industry awards from Cannes, Future Marketing Awards, OMMA (USA), WMA, MSN Emmesseny, Mixx, Ad-Tech New York and Epica. In 2006, he won Grand Prix and Gold at the European Brand Activation Awards 2006 for the Nokia Concept Lounge, a campaign featured on WARC and Trendspotting.com as an excellent example of Customer Made thinking. Douglas is also a regular speaker for the Independent Publishers Alliance where he provides small publishers effective strategies to marketing online.
Douglas most recent role was as the Global Innovations Officer at Blast Radius, one of the world’s leading digital shops, where he oversaw all innovations and strategic planning for Nokia. He founded HolyTornado! in 2009 to create a truly independent voice for customers in the world of digital marketing and to advance his mission to help brands become more human in the way they approach consumers online.
